Chain link sales and operation slowed during World War II as valuable steel was instead prioritized for the manufacturing of equipment and munitions. In Britain, a large portion of metal fencing in public areas was recycled for the war effort.
This scarcity created a level of demand and prestige when it came to chain link fencing. In fact, some fences from that era even qualify for historical preservation today.
